Vacancy for Treasurer (unpaid)

Registered charity number 326945
The Sidney Nolan Trust was established by Sidney Nolan in 1985. Sidney wished for a permanent gallery in Britain for the exhibition of his paintings, and for a wide range of arts-based activities in a place of scenic beauty. To this end he purchased Rodd Farm in Herefordshire with its outbuildings and gave it to the Trust with a collection of his paintings. Lady Nolan has continued to support the Trust generously since Sidney’s death in 1992.
Currently the Trust is entering a transitional phase, new trustees are being appointed and a new governance structure has been adopted to meet modern requirements. The Trust is building its programmes in music, printmaking, book arts, sculpture and the arts generally. Meanwhile it is finalising plans for a permanent exhibition of Sir Sidney’s work.
As part of the changes to its governance, the Trust has defined the role of the Treasurer so that s/he will be responsible for generating, with the full-time Manager of the Trust, the annual budget and the Trust’s investment policy. The Treasurer will fulfil the functions that would fall to an audit committee in a larger organisation. The post is unpaid.
The Trust’s financial position is sound. It has reserves in excess of four times annual expenditure. However in view of its ambitious expansion plans, it is likely that it will wish to tap official and charitable sources of funds. The trustees will wish to consider launching an international appeal for funds at an appropriate point when its plans for the future are further developed.
The Trust meets three times a year, usually at the Rodd, near Presteigne. In addition, consideration is being given to the setting-up of Finance and General Purposes Committee, to meet in the gaps between full Trust meetings; and ad hoc committees to consider particular matters are set up as required.
Further details of the Trust and its work can be found on this website. The Annual Report & Accounts are available on the Charity Commission website.
Anyone interested in this challenging but rewarding role should, in the first instance, contact Anthony Plant, Trust manager. He will arrange for qualified applicants to hold informal discussions of the role with the chair or other trustees as seems appropriate. Tel: 01544 260149.

"Of the four great ancient agricultural buildings at The Rodd, there is only the Cattle Byre for which a new role had not been determined. It is probably the most singular building of them all. In our first three years at The Rodd the herdsman had used it for wintering the his prize-winning pedigree cattle.  Sidney’s greatest pleasure was the welsh Black Cattle. He would go over to the Cattle Byre in the evenings to say good night to them and to give the bull a scratch.  Sidney knew that the Cattle Byre should not essentially be altered. It was (and is) most uncommon to have a byre of this age still with the racks and stalls in place. The stalls suggested places for sculpture to be placed in them and the space above is even more impressive. Looking from one end to the other it is like a great hall but the rafters would not take too much weight; Sidney had thought of it for a place for his collection of artefacts from around the world (now sadly dispersed)."  (Lady Nolan 2010.)
