Join contemporary painter Daniel MacCarthy for an intensive two-day workshop exploring the experimental materials and fast, intuitive working methods associated with Sidney Nolan. Held at The Rodd, Nolan’s former home and studio, this workshop invites artists with prior experience to immerse themselves in the processes that shaped one of the twentieth century’s most distinctive painters.
Working primarily on gloss (kaolin-primed) paper—one of Nolan’s preferred surfaces—participants will explore the expressive possibilities of oils, inks, and watercolours, alongside a range of less conventional materials. Through guided demonstrations and practical exercises, the workshop will introduce key aspects of Nolan’s approach to painting on paper, including the preparation of grounds, the use of different mediums, and the freedom to experiment beyond traditional materials.
Across the two days, participants will investigate core themes in Nolan’s working practice: painting at speed, painting from memory and imagination, and embracing chance within the creative process. Studio sessions will include techniques such as dragging paint across the surface, wet-on-wet application, and experimental mono-printing, encouraging participants to discover new ways of working and to develop a more spontaneous relationship with their materials.
Designed for artists and adults with previous art experience, the workshop offers both practical skill-building and a deeper understanding of Nolan’s material experimentation. Set within the inspiring environment of The Rodd, it provides a rare opportunity to explore painting processes connected to the legacy of Sidney Nolan while developing your own contemporary practice.
